7 Pillow Myths, Busted

Firmer is better, you only need to wash the cover, one pillow fits all. We separate seven common pillow beliefs from the facts, so you can choose and care for yours with confidence.
Plenty of what we believe about pillows is passed down rather than checked.
Pillow advice gets handed around like folklore. Someone swears by the firmest option, someone else by the softest, and everybody has a view on how often to wash or replace one. Some of it holds up, and some of it does not.
Here are seven common myths, with a modest reality check for each. This is general wellness guidance and not medical advice, so please see a healthcare professional about any ongoing pain.
Myth: A firmer pillow is always better
Reality: Comfort depends on fit, not firmness alone. A very firm pillow can push the head too high, while a very soft one lets it sink. Medium-firm foam is popular because it gives a little and then holds. Try a pillow in your usual sleeping position and notice whether your head stays level with your spine, since that tells you more than a firm press with your hand.
Remember that your body, bed and habits are your own, so what suits a friend may not suit you.
Myth: A pillow lasts forever
Reality: Every pillow wears out eventually. Loose fibre packs down and foam loses its spring. If yours is flat, lumpy or no longer comfortable, replacing it is reasonable. A useful rule is to fold it in half and let go: it should recover, not stay folded. Solid foam blocks keep their form better than loose filling, but even they should be checked from time to time.
Pillows made of loose filling are the most likely to flatten, which is why a solid block can feel noticeably different after a few months of use.
Myth: Only the cover needs washing
Reality: The core needs attention too. A zip-off cover can be laundered following its care label, but the foam should be spot cleaned and left to air dry fully before the cover goes back on. Doing this regularly keeps the pillow fresh and extends its useful life.
Cover care matters as well. Washing it following its care label keeps the surface you touch every night clean, while the foam stays protected underneath.
Care tip: Avoid soaking foam or drying it with heat, as both can damage the core.
Myth: One pillow suits every sleeper
Reality: Your sleeping position changes what you need. As a rough guide:
- Side sleepers often like more height
- Back sleepers tend to like a lower, even surface
- Stomach sleepers are usually comfortable with something low and soft
- Combination sleepers often settle for an even block that works in more than one position
Rather than choosing by label, pick by how you actually lie down.

Myth: Memory foam always feels hot
Reality: Feel varies from pillow to pillow. Cover fabric, airflow in the room and bedding all play a part. A breathable cover and a light pillowcase can make a noticeable difference. A zip-off cover that you wash regularly also helps the pillow feel fresher, and keeping the bedroom well ventilated does the rest.
If a pillow still feels warm to you, try airing it and the room before bed, and choose lighter bedding.
Myth: A new pillow should feel perfect on night one
Reality: Your body needs time to adjust. Moving from a flat fibre pillow to a foam block can feel unfamiliar. Give it a week or two in your usual sleeping position before you judge it. Many people find that the first night or two feels different simply because their body is used to something else. Keep your sleeping position consistent while you adjust.
Patience is a sensible part of the process.
Myth: A pillow can fix any neck problem
Reality: A pillow supports comfort, but it is not a treatment. It cannot replace proper advice, and persistent pain, numbness or tingling deserves a visit to a healthcare professional. Think of the pillow as one part of a comfortable sleep setup that also includes your mattress, your routine and your daytime habits.
