Rectangle vs Contour Pillow: Which Is Better for Side Sleepers?

Side sleepers need a pillow that bridges the gap between ear and mattress. Compare an IDITRI rectangle pillow with a contour pillow on loft, shoulder room and familiar feel.
Side sleepers can do well on either shape if the gap is filled.
Lying on your side leaves a space between your ear and the mattress, roughly as wide as your shoulder. Whatever pillow you choose has to bridge that space, or your head drops and your neck bends sideways for hours. Both a plain rectangle and a sculpted contour can do the job, in different ways.
This post compares two IDITRI memory foam pillows of the same size, using only their product details. It is general wellness guidance, not personal medical advice.
Why side sleeping is a pillow puzzle
Your shoulder is the problem and the solution at once. It lifts the head off the bed, which is why side sleepers usually need more loft, meaning pillow height, than back sleepers. But the shoulder also needs somewhere to go, so a pillow that is too wide or too stiff can crowd it.
That gives us three things to judge: how well the pillow fills the gap, how much room it leaves for the shoulder, and how natural it feels when you roll over.
Keep in mind that a pillow can only do so much on its own. A softer mattress lets the shoulder sink in and may call for a slightly lower pillow, while a firmer mattress often asks for a little more height. Think of the pillow and the mattress as a pair rather than two separate choices.
Rolling over matters too. Most people turn several times a night, so a pillow that feels right on your side but awkward on your back may not stay comfortable until morning.
The two pillows at a glance

|---|---|---|
| Shape | Even rectangular foam block | Curved profile with a neck hollow |

| Cover | Spandex cover, unzips for washing | Breathable cover, unzips fully |
| Best for | Those who like a classic pillow shape | Those who want a sculpted neck rest |
Loft and gap-filling
The rectangle is one solid foam block, so it offers the same height across its width. The foam gives way slowly as you lie down, then holds the head steadily rather than letting it sink all the way through. For many side sleepers that even loft is enough.
The contour takes a different route. Its curved profile is described as cradling the head and neck, with the raised area meant to sit under the neck. That shaping is helpful if you want the pillow itself to do the gap-filling rather than relying on a flat surface.
Shoulder room and familiarity
Because the rectangle is a neat block with no hollow, you can slide it toward or away from your shoulder to suit you. It also sits squarely on the bed, which gives a tidy, hotel-style look, and one block of foam means no fibre to plump each night.
The rectangle is also the familiar shape. If you have used regular bed pillows all your life, it needs the least adjustment. A contour asks you to position your neck on purpose, which pays off for some people and feels fussy to others.
Which one suits you?
Neither is a winner for everyone. Match the pillow to your habits.
- Pick the rectangle if you like the traditional shape and want to reposition it freely.
- Pick the rectangle if you prefer a plush, settled feel with no daily plumping.
- Pick the contour if you want a defined neck hollow and a raised edge.
- Pick the contour if you sometimes drift onto your back or stomach as well as your side.
You can see more of each style on our rectangle pillows page and contour pillows page.
Trying a new pillow properly
Whichever shape you pick, give it a week or two in your usual position before deciding. Lie on your side and check that your nose lines up roughly with the middle of your chest and your shoulder feels free.
Care tip: unzip the cover and wash it as per its care label, then spot clean the foam core and let it air dry fully.
If you have ongoing neck pain, numbness or tingling, please see a qualified healthcare professional. A good pillow is designed to support comfortable sleep, but it is not a treatment.
