A Side Sleeper's Guide to Pillow Height

4 min readIDITRI Editorial

Side sleeping asks a lot of a pillow, because the gap between ear and mattress has to be filled just right. Here is how to judge height, and what to look for in a rectangular memory foam pillow.

For a side sleeper, pillow height is the whole story.

Lie on your side and you will notice something that back sleepers never think about: there is a large gap between your ear and the mattress. Your pillow has to fill that gap, and it has to do it exactly. Too little height and your head sags toward the bed. Too much and it is pushed up and away from your shoulders.

This guide explains how to judge the right height, how to test a pillow at home, and what to look for in a rectangular memory foam design. It is general wellness guidance and not a substitute for personalised medical advice.

Why the gap matters

The distance from your ear to the outer edge of your shoulder is what your pillow needs to bridge. For most adults it is a few inches, and it varies with shoulder width and mattress softness. A softer mattress lets your shoulder sink in, which reduces the gap. A firmer one increases it.

When the height is right, your head stays level with your spine, like a straight line running from the middle of the forehead to the middle of the hips. When it is wrong, the neck bends sideways for hours, and the muscles around it keep working while you try to rest.

Too low or too high? The signs to look for

Your body usually tells you what is happening. Here are some common clues:

  • Too low: your head tilts toward the mattress, your lower shoulder feels squeezed, and you keep folding the pillow in half
  • Too high: your head tilts upward, your top shoulder feels hiked, and you wake with a stretched feeling along one side of the neck
  • About right: your nose points straight ahead and your jaw feels relaxed rather than clenched

Photos can help. Ask someone to take a picture of you lying on your side from behind, or prop your phone at the foot of the bed.

A quick home test for the right height

You do not need special tools to check your setup. Follow these steps:

  1. Lie on your side in your usual position with the pillow under your head.
  2. Ask a helper to look at you from behind, or take a photo.
  3. Check that your head sits level with your spine, not tilted up or down.
  4. Adjust by sliding the pillow closer to your neck or adding a thin folded towel under it.
  5. Re-test over a few nights, since comfort is more reliable than a single glance.

If you cannot get the line straight with the pillow you have, that is useful information. The pillow, not you, may be the thing that needs to change.

Why memory foam suits side sleepers

Loose-fill pillows can shift around as you move, so the height you set at bedtime is not always the height you have at 3 a.m. Memory foam holds its loft. It presses in a little under the head, takes the shape of your head and neck, and then holds a steady height instead of flattening.

That steadiness matters for side sleepers because you tend to change position. A single block of foam gives the same support wherever your head lands, whether you shift towards the edge or the middle.

Where the IDITRI Memory Foam Pillow fits

The IDITRI Memory Foam Pillow for Sleeping in Ash Black is a rectangular pillow built from one uniform block of high-density memory foam. Because it is designed to give even support from edge to edge, there is no sweet spot to search for, and you can drift across the surface during the night.

  • Medium, balanced feel, neither too soft nor too firm
  • Suits side and back sleepers
  • 19 x 12 x 4 inches, a classic rectangular size
  • Removable zip cover, to be washed as per its care label

If you prefer a lighter shade, the Sky Blue rectangle pillow comes in the same 19 x 12 x 4 inch size. You can compare every colour on our rectangle pillows page, or look at a more sculpted shape in our contour pillows collection.

Habits that help side sleepers

Pillow height is one piece of the picture. A few small habits can make side sleeping more comfortable:

Tip: Rest your lower shoulder beside the pillow, not under it, and keep your chin neutral rather than tucked. A soft pillow between the knees can also help your hips and back feel more settled.

Give any new pillow a week or two to feel familiar, and test it in your normal sleeping position before deciding. If you experience ongoing neck pain, numbness or tingling, please see a qualified healthcare professional. A well-chosen pillow supports comfortable sleep, but it is not a treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about IDITRI pillows and sleep comfort

What makes IDITRI memory foam pillows different?

IDITRI pillows are designed around ergonomic comfort — combining high-density memory foam with body-responsive shaping so every curve of your neck and head is gently supported throughout the night.

Is the contour shape suitable for all sleep positions?

Yes. The raised edges cradle the head during side sleeping, while the lower centre offers gentler support for back and stomach sleeping.

How long does it take to adjust to a new pillow?

Memory foam softens and moulds to your neck with body warmth, so give a new shape a few nights to settle in before you decide.

Is the cover removable and washable?

Yes. Remove the outer cover before cleaning and wash it according to its care label. Do not machine wash the memory foam core; spot clean the foam when required and allow it to air dry completely before use.

What if I feel the pillow is not right for me?

IDITRI pillows are sold through Amazon, so returns and replacements follow the return window shown on the product's Amazon listing.
